The club
JUNIOR MEMBERS
At table tennis club (TTV) Amstelveen we pay a lot of attention to the youth of our club.
At the moment we have about 50 junior members aged between 8 and 18, both boys and girls and, due to Amstelveen’s international character, also with different cultural backgrounds.
What can players under 18 years of age (junior members) expect from our club?
The main objective of our club is to have our members enjoy playing table tennis. To this end we offer the following possibilities:
Training
Junior members can train twice a week. On Monday and Thursday evenings: see the training schedule. In these training sessions players learn the basic techniques from experienced trainers and the players are coached on how to improve their table tennis game. The training is split into three groups based on a combination of age and level of play.
The first 2 groups work with the TTV Amstelveen Superstar program, a booklet that motivates the junior players to get to some basic level quickly. Feel free to check out the program at the link. To print the booklet use this link.
There are no training sessions during school holidays.
Competition
Junior members can also take part in the competition, which is a fun and challenging way to improve their game. The Dutch Table Tennis Association (NTTB) organises two league competitions a year. In spring, from February to April, and in autumn from September to November. Junior teams play their matches on Saturdays.
The club always has room for more enthusiastic players who want to participate in the competition. Please let your trainer know if you are interested.
Other activities
In addition to regular training and competition, there are a number of other fun activities organised for our junior members, examples of which are:
- Introduction days for new members
- Internal tournaments: such as the winter tournament, club championships and parent-child tournament
- External tournaments such as the Amsterdam Championships
- Annual clinic: in the past with Bettine Vriesekoop (former European champion), Jonah Kahn (former international and premier league player) and Britt Eerland (current player of the Dutch team and in the top 30 of the world)
- Club BBQ and mini-training week.

HISTORY
TTV Amstelveen was founded in 1947 as table tennis club VDO (“Skillful Through Practice”) and moved into the building “De Liefde” at the Da Costakade in Amsterdam as its regular playing venue, only to move to a gym of a school on the Crijnssenstraat in Amsterdam after some time.
In 1969 the club merged with the Rembrandt Table Tennis Club, named after their former gym on the Rembrandtweg in Amstelveen. The merger club retained the name TTV VDO and the name TTV Rembrandt disappeared from the scene.
In 1972, thanks to the then chairman Ferry Verbraak, the NMB bank was willing to sponsor our club. Partly thanks to the sponsor’s contribution, we were able to move into our own new playing venue at the Van Heuven Goedhartlaan in 1974, where we grew into a flourishing club that created furore under the name NMB/VDO.
To the great disappointment of all members at the time, the NMB bank (merged into ING bank) stopped its sponsorship in 1993 and, due to planned new construction at the site of our gym, we were forced to leave this great venue.
We changed our name to TTV Amstelveen and in 1997 moved into our current location (with canteen) at Landtong 14 in Amstelveen.
Memorable in this piece of history is that our longest playing member Jaap “Break” Boerop received an “association cross” by the NTTB in 2015 for 50 years of membership of TTV Amstelveen.
Despite his respectable age of 80+, Jaap still plays in the regional competition and weekly joins the free play at one of our club evenings to enjoy a game of table tennis. He is also one of the initiators of the 55+ group that is active on Friday mornings.
After an investigation by the NTTB it turned out that Jaap is even the oldest competition player in the Netherlands at the end of 2020 and has been a member of the NTTB for 65 years. The NTTB appreciated this with a GREAT STORY (Dutch only) on its website which has also been published in Amstelveen’s local newspaper.
