On Saturday 24 June, 12 youth members participated in the 2023 club championships. Afterwards, organising/attending youth coaches Guus and Ben could look back with satisfaction on a good and smoothly run and enjoyable tournament.
Everyone who had signed up was on time so that we could start as planned around 11 o’clock. We started with two pools of 6 so that everyone played 5 matches (‘best of 3’).
Then the top 3 of the two pools were placed in pool A and the last 3 in pool B. After a short break, these (also ‘best of 3’) matches were also being played.
Games were played seriously and with supreme concentration and the counting was also handled well by everyone, allowing us to finish the championships on time ((shortly before 3 o’clock).
Although we felt that everyone who competed was a winner, we still awarded a ‘real’ cup for 1st and 2nd place in Pool A and a cup for 1st place in Pool B.
Winner in Pool A was Yu Chen (Emma) while Peng Yu Pan finished narrowly as runner-up. Ioana Nicorescu had as many points as Peng Yu but came third as she narrowly lost the mutual match with him 2-1.
The 1st prize cup for Pool B went to Peng Yu He; a fine achievement as he has only recently joined our club.
Finally, Roy Qiu was awarded the encouragement prize. Although he did not win many matches, he showed a lot of commitment and our expectation is that he will definitely finish higher next time.
